Moving calculator

Move-In Cost Calculator

Estimate cash needed before moving by adding rent, deposits, fees, movers, furniture, setup costs, and emergency buffer.

Last reviewed: July 3, 2026 · Use case: planning estimate, comparison, and budgeting support.

When to use this calculator

Use this calculator before committing to a new rental or home. The first month can require much more cash than rent alone because deposits, setup fees, transport, furniture, and repairs happen at the same time.

A move-in estimate protects you from starting a lease with no cash left for food, transportation, small repairs, or unexpected problems.

Formula used

Move-in cash = first rent + deposit + fees + moving cost + furniture basics + utility setup + emergency buffer.

The formula is intentionally simple so it can be used for quick planning. Real bills, quotes, and installation costs can include fixed fees, taxes, tiers, labor, product limits, and site-specific conditions that a calculator cannot see.
