Paint Coverage Calculator Guide: Known Wall Area to Gallons
Convert a known wall area into paint gallons using coats, coverage per gallon, and waste percentage.
Last reviewed: July 5, 2026. Use this calculator when you already know the wall area and want to convert it into gallons. It is faster than entering full room dimensions again.
Formula
Paint needed: wall area × coats × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per gallon.
If wall area is 500 sq ft, coats are 2, coverage is 350 sq ft/gallon, and waste is 10%, the estimate is about 3.14 gallons.
When this calculator is better
- You measured several walls separately.
- The room is irregular and you already added the wall areas.
- You are estimating a hallway, stair wall, or accent wall.
- You want to adjust waste without remeasuring.
Coverage warnings
Coverage printed on the can assumes certain surface conditions. Rough texture, raw drywall, patches, stains, and drastic color changes can reduce real coverage.
Rounding
Round based on product size and risk. For a visible final coat, having touch-up paint left is usually better than being short.
