Room Area Calculator Guide: Square Feet, Perimeter, and Irregular Rooms
Calculate room area and perimeter for flooring, rugs, furniture planning, paint prep, and material estimates.
Last reviewed: July 5, 2026. Room area looks basic, but it is the starting point for flooring, rugs, furniture layout, paint planning, and material ordering.
Rectangular room formula
Area: length × width. Perimeter: 2 × (length + width).
A 12 × 10 ft room has 120 sq ft of area and 44 ft of perimeter.
Irregular rooms
Break L-shaped or unusual rooms into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle separately, then add the areas. This is usually more accurate than forcing one rough length and width.
What area and perimeter are used for
| Number | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Area | Flooring, rugs, room capacity, basic space planning |
| Perimeter | Baseboards, trim, some wall planning |
| Wall area | Paint estimates, but you also need wall height |
Measurement tips
- Measure wall to wall unless you specifically need usable furniture space.
- Keep units consistent.
- Measure closets separately if material will continue inside.
- Round material purchases only after adding waste or product coverage.
