Flooring calculator
Flooring Boxes Calculator
Estimate how many boxes of flooring to buy from total area, waste percentage, and square feet per box.
When to use this calculator
Use this calculator after measuring room area and choosing a flooring product. It converts the final square footage into whole boxes so you do not accidentally buy partial coverage.
Flooring is sold in fixed pack sizes. You usually cannot buy exactly the square footage needed, so rounding up is normal.
Formula used
Boxes needed = ceiling(area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100) ÷ box coverage).
The formula is intentionally simple so it can be used for quick planning. Real bills, quotes, and installation costs can include fixed fees, taxes, tiers, labor, product limits, and site-specific conditions that a calculator cannot see.
Input guide
| Input | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Area | Measured room or project area in square feet. |
| Waste percentage | Extra material for cuts, pattern, and mistakes. |
| Box coverage | Square feet covered by one box. |
| Rounded boxes | The result rounds up to a whole number of boxes. |
Examples
Box conversion
240 sq ft with 10% waste becomes 264 sq ft. If each box covers 20 sq ft, buy 14 boxes.
Complex layout
Diagonal patterns, closets, and transitions may need more waste than a simple rectangle.

FAQ
Why round up?
Stores sell whole boxes, and underbuying can delay a project.
Can I return extra boxes?
Often, but policies vary. Check before buying.
Should I keep spare flooring?
Yes if storage is practical, because matching discontinued flooring later is hard.
